FAQs

The origin of our reflections on digital ethics stems from a simple observation we made more than ten years ago: we are at the very beginning of a digital revolution, illustrated by the gradual digitization of our society. How can we trust digital applications if we are unable to assess them from an ethical perspective?

It is from this reflection that we developed our concepts, methodologies, and analytical tools, which have gradually been recognized by academic communities and the professional world.

Without trust, the use and impact of digital solutions cannot be effective for society. Ethics must serve as the regulatory framework that enables the development of responsible and trustworthy digital technologies. The ADEL label represents this foundation of digital trust.

The ADEL label is based on a framework that is both transversal and systemic, derived from more than ten years of research in applied digital ethics. This framework evolves over time through feedback from audited organizations and contributions from GoodAlgo’s multidisciplinary experts and its Digital Ethics community.

Currently, GoodAlgo’s scientific research is reflected in the publication of over a hundred scientific and press articles, conferences, around ten books, a manifesto on ethical and responsible AI, as well as several awards and recognitions (see national and international scientific recognition).

The eligibility criteria for obtaining the label are demanding, rigorous, and comprehensive (including supporting documents) to ensure a high level of ethics in the audited digital solution.

The foundations of this label have been adopted by various public institutions such as the Ministry of Health as part of the “Ma Santé 2022” plan, as well as through hearings with the CNIL, the National Assembly, the HAS, INCa, and others (see institutional recognition).

Finally, GoodAlgo’s approach, centered on digital ethics, has been validated by both the private sector (L’Oréal, Sanofi, Groupe VYV, Clinique Pasteur, CNP Assurance, etc.) and the public sector (RSI, Cancer Centers, Occitanie Region, Nantes Métropole, etc.) (see client recognition).

The key characteristics of the ADEL label are as follows:

  • It is available in two distinct labels depending on the nature of the audited digital solution, whether it integrates AI or not: ADEL Project and ADEL – AI Act;
  • The certification is targeted and applies to digital projects (Big Data, connected objects, information systems, AI, platforms, digital applications, etc.), rather than organizations;
  • The evaluation framework (template) evolves according to the nature and sector of application of the audited digital solution;
  • The systemic audit covers the entire digital project, from its design to its implementation and use. It is based on six ethical domains: Data Ethics – Algorithm Ethics – Systems Ethics – Environmental Ethics – Practices Ethics – Decision Ethics;
  • The ADEL – AI Act label includes, in addition to the systemic audit, algorithmic testing of the AI system and its database (AXIOETK evaluation method) to assess the level of algorithmic ethical commitment (discrimination, quality, robustness, reliability, interpretability, etc.). These tests are conducted by data scientists who master AI concepts and development;
  • A roadmap including key and secondary ethical recommendations is provided to audited organizations to help improve their practices;
  • An independent scientific expert committee is established to evolve the frameworks and tools;
  • The label is valid for 2 years (+ an additional year for renewal depending on whether the audited digital solution has evolved or not);
  • Three levels of certification are available depending on the overall score and the quality of supporting documents: Gold – Silver – Bronze;
  • The certification process relies on an online evaluation platform combined with human support from consultants and ethics experts.

All types of organizations and entities, whether public or private (across all sectors), that design and develop digital solutions powered by data.

The digital solutions/projects eligible for certification must be at an advanced stage of development, or already completed.

The departments and functions typically interested in or concerned by obtaining the ADEL label include: Digital, Ethics, Legal, Human Resources, Compliance & Risk, CSR, Communication, Strategy & Governance, R&D, and Sales.

  • For the ADEL–Project label, the average time required for an audited organization is estimated to be between 1 and 2 days (depending on the number of supporting documents requested).

  • For the ADEL–AI Act label, the average time required is estimated to be between 2 and 4 days (depending on the number of supporting documents requested and the level of complexity of the AI).

To ensure proper monitoring and support throughout the entire certification process, GoodAlgo is appointed to carry out the audit from start to finish. To do so, it provides the audited organization with its ADEL online ethical evaluation platform, as well as its digital ethics consultants.

For reasons related to conflicts of interest and neutrality, it is important to emphasize that GoodAlgo commits not to offer consulting services to organizations that did not obtain the ADEL label and wish to reapply a second time.

However, GoodAlgo may provide ethical support services for digital projects during their development, deployment, and monitoring phases, outside the certification process (before and after obtaining the ADEL label).
